About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Join +Fraser Cain and +Pamela Gay for a live episode of Astronomy Cast. We'll record our 30-minute show, and then stay tuned for them to answer questions! Ep. 420: FIRE! One of the most dangerous things that can happen inside a spacecraft is fire. Seriously, it's NASA's worst nightmare, and for good reason. Fire acts differently in space, and astronauts are always on alert. Here's why.

Welcome back.

Pamela: you have to see Gravity! It's awesome! (No SciFi movie ever gets all the physics correctly anyways. Just enjoy it for what it is.)

Didn't they have a fire in Skylab or Mir or whatever it was?

The talk about flushing the atmosphere reminded me of an episode if STTNG where the enterprise runs into trouble. Among other bad things, Geordie and beverly are trapped in a cargo bay when they discover a fire in the wall. In the end they decide to decompress the cargo bay to extinguish the fire.

Yeah, I was also thinking of Gravity when you were talking about fire extinguishers. Gravity borrowed the idea of using it as a propulsion devise from a movie about going to the Moon in the 50s, although I think they were using an oxygen canister as a thruster to save someone who had fallen off the ship (that didn't have RCS-thrusters...).

If you had a ball of fire in space, why not put it in a bag and have a little canister of CO2 vent into the bag and put the fire out?

The eclipse trip sounds very cool, plus I did a little time at SIU Carbondale in the late 60s. It would be great to see an eclipse and to meet you guys. I am a devoted fan.
