Pamela is at a conference, so we're going to record later today than usual! Join +Fraser Cain and +Pamela Gay for a live episode of Astronomy Cast. We'll record our 30-minute show, and then stay tuned for them to answer questions! Ep. 397: A Universe From Nothing One of the biggest, most basic questions you can ask is: “why is there something and not nothing?” The reality is that we don’t know the answer, we might never know the answer. Let's probe to the edge of what we can explain, and what ideas cosmologists have proposed to explain how we all got here.

These kinds of forays into scientific flights of fancy are the best...where imagination and speculation come out to play.

This is a great chat guys. Thanks.

So, then, where do the branes come from? Where do these upper dimensions come from? This is a question that can be asked over and over again no matter how far back you go. No matter how much we discover, we can always ask that question to the point of failure.

...more of a philosophical question.
If we assume, that we are not alone, and if there are species and civilizations far more advanced than ours by a factor of a million or more, then it would be impossible to solve, i.e. understand everything, before, BOOOM our universe disappears, implodes, whatever.
In other words all the knowledge through science collected by all beings in the universe with all their findings and conclusion will never achieve the goal of ultimate understanding and maybe control... where's the logic of it all.
What is your thought on that? -
First of all, belated Happy Birthday, Pamela, and thank you for your time educating us ;-) !
Expansion of the universe after the BB into what? Where did the (infinite) space come from to expand into? AND, did time actually exist then? -
Got stumbled upon this video, never had heard of this site universetoday (am sorry) but this site and such hangouts look so fascinating, every monday, will try to seethe hangout live, awesome work by the way, keep going :)

The Q&A portion of this episode is arguably the best - great lines, funny stuff!

I still think that following Einstein's Relativity, where gravity is the result of the curvature of spacetime, is the path to take. Basically, if I understand it accurately, gravity, as we call it, isn't gravity - gravity is the result of the curvature of spacetime. The curvature of spacetime is warped by matter and energy. I mean, they are clearly related since one affects the other: gravity bends the path of light, and mass warps spacetime, where mass and energy are manifestations of the same thing (E=mc^2).

Thank you both, for all your hard work kicking these video's out. The dedication to keep us video vans entertained, informed, and thinking, is appreciated more than either of you could know. Pamela, thanks for indulging Fraser with this topic. I know it isn't your thing, but it was a fun episode.Take care, and thank you again.

The Lawrence Krauss point that was mentioned by Fraser is all that is need to fully address this subject.Go on utube and search Krauss,A Universe From Nothing...He's written a book with this title and as mentioned,he's all over utube speaking about it.Oh,and I'm pretty sure he doesn't subscribe to string theory. Very smart fella.Im a fan of you guys for about 7 yrs.Keep it up.....
