Astronomy Cast 327: Telescope Making, Part 1
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Why pick up a low quality, wobbly telescope from the department store when you can craft your own - just like Galileo, and all the great astronomers from history. For a minor investment, you can build a worthy telescope out of spare parts and high quality kits. Visit the Astronomy Cast Page to subscribe to the audio podcast! We record Astronomy Cast as a live Google+ Hangout on Air every Monday at 12:00 pm Pacific / 3:00 pm Eastern. You can watch here on Universe Today or from the Astronomy Cast Google+ page. Be careful about pointing lasers at the sky. It is a felony in some countries (like the US and Canada) to point a laser at an airplane. And unlike the rule of cell phones on airplanes, lasers (especially green lasers) can blind pilots. Blind pilots have a very hard time flying airplanes. If you can hear an airplane, turn off your laser.

I bought a Galileoscope then went to Walmart and found that I could have spent $2.00 more and got a telescope and eyepiece with a focusing knob. The "G" scope has stayed where it is and I don't even remember where that is.

At 0:26:49 there is something said about needing a small mirror that is flat. You can buy those at Michael's in the kids craft area.
