mmm earth is a rocky planet , both mars Mercurius Venus are as well and Pluto and other smaller bodies, except earth non have an magnetic field as strong as needed to repel harmfull radiation coming from our star. you would expect Venus being very simulair in size to have one yet it's field is way way weaker. what is the difference? can Thea that collided with earth and formed the moon have been the cause? We know all land turned into lava what did Thea bring more metals? did it cause shockwaves enough to have an influence on the convection layer? Thereby increasing earth magnetic field in strength? How much water did Thea gave us? the moon is also very important to stabilize the climate and yet it took almost 3 billion years to go from single cell to multi cellulair life. perhaps the real question should be how many planets in the habitable zone have oceans and a strong magnetic field as well as a moon to stabilize the climate for atleast 3 billion years and are not tidally locked. i think life is out there but i am also afraid multi cellulair life is much more rare and advanced technology life perhaps even much more rare then that. As well short lived in cosmic terms. I don't think many civs life tens of thousands of years after the discovery of weapons of mass destruction or enough industry to alter the climate.

5:30 Or, because the Universe is so big, and so old, perhaps the life would inevitably appear at least in one planet, perhaps that planet is ours.

Smart guy. But no different than a science fiction writer when making a speech like this. We share close DNA with almost every creature on Earth from common mold to our precious house pets. Equating intelligence by proxy then relating it to abstract thought serves no purpose. Other than to fascinate an audience. While his talk is impassioned, with all his knowledge he's still just whistling in the dark. Many of his statements in the past I've found inflammatory and irresponsible. But I do have to show respect for someone that has achieved so much in his chosen profession. No one can deny that he's one smart fella. Maybe he should stick to science instead of trying to step in the shoes of much more talented orators and even tempered people like Carl Sagan..
