A 3D Map of the Solar System Map – A Short Documentary
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
This short video explains how to create a 1: six billion scale map of the Solar System. Using simple graphics and 3D animation, it takes you on a fascinating and educational journey explaining the speed of light and its relationship to our solar system. You will understand why it is almost impossible to create a true to scale 'paper' map of the Solar System. It is only by superimposing its structure in a virtual 3D environment, that we gain an accurate insight into its incredible size. We then go on a high speed tour from the Sun to Pluto and back, using a 3D model of Alice Springs to demonstrate the scaled size of the Solar System. This is real science made simple for adults and children. Many thanks to Aerometrex Pty Ltd for providing the orthophotograph and 3D model over Alice Springs, Central Australia for this video.

1 sun = 6 billion basketballs? Is that right? There are more than 6 billion people on earth and we are much larger than a basketball. Dividing by the diameters just tells you how many basketballs you can line up across the front of the sun, not how many basketballs equals the volume of the sun. But, I guess for the purpose of this video, it doesn't matter.

Kinda boring to walk through the math to scale but, other than that, well done. Just imagine if you added the newly "discovered" Planet 9 to that map, you'd need a street twice as long.

no sense (dont worry and angry)

So you'd need around a mile of land to make a scale sol. system model from a basketball-sized sun?? Great Work By the way. It needs more views.

Lovely piece of work, well done Rwlante :)

Thanks, I did put a lot of effort into it.

Great work! It should have more views

I love this video. Your work is highly appreciated. This reminds us how much humility we need considering the creator of this vast universe

It's a shame more people aren't watching videos like this on YouTube instead of Kim Kardashian or however you spell her stupid name. Thanks for posting!

Wow all the math you put into this to make it accurate is much appreciated and needed. Good job!
