I actually ran at a gym treadmill at a running pace for an hour. I was white as a sheet but got used to it and could run for an hour pretty fast. I didn't drop a pound. When I tried running on regular cement ground, Dear Jesus, my body was hella heavy. So outdoor and indoor running is different...

Now depending on the size of your home training at the gym is more efficient then training at home, most of us have regular home size house with no ventilation (air circulation system) and where as it is perfectly ok for regular daily activities it is not sufficient for strenuous exercise, unless you make sure that all the windows are open while exercising. In a gym the space is much larger and most of them have ventilation system which provides an adequate amount of breathable air for exercising. So if you do it at home make sure to open your window and you will improve on your performance. About stretching before exercise it is true that stretching your muscle will not prevent injury but stretching has two effect, it stenches your muscle and it warms them up and warming up your muscle will prevent injuries, Also stretching before work out helps you maintaining your flexibility, it doesn't have to be right before your work out, it could be anytime during the day but it is a good discipline to do it then, I mean you are going to work out might as well do your stretching and it will warm you up before your workout. Can't go wrong there. No pain no gain this relates to body building not to exercise for health purposes. The word gain here relate to muscle gain and it refers to the pain you fell when you actually inflated you muscle a little more then it is normally and to the build up of lactic acid in your muscle which occurs when your muscle has been work out to it efficient limit. So where it is an indicator that you have worked your muscle sufficiently it could also be an indicator that you have overworked you muscle, experience or a good coach only can help you know where the difference between the two lays. That is why that no pain, no gain is for body builders only.
