It COULD be achievable within our lifetime! But, how would an interstellar rocket-ship work? On this week's episode of Space Time, Matt talks options for interstellar travel - from traditional rocket fuel to antimatter drives, could we travel to other star systems? Australian Scientists Prove Time Travel Is Possible great

But what is the need? There are movies that require the idea that "humanity must survive". Or maybe that enthusiasts would be hoping that their own dna might survive into the future. And even further that they might be reincarnated with intact memory or something.
But then who really gives that much of a toss about human dna apart from their own or their children. let alone the dna of the population of earth in say 100 years time.
I can cross the street here or cross the street there. In 200 years the earth will be populated by an entirely different set of individuals depending upon where I cross the road. Go shopping with your dog. Tie it here or tie it there. Every future mother that walks past will have a different child. And nowadays the ripple effect is pretty quick. Make a comment online. Send it now. Send it later. See what I'm getting at?
Sure, let's continue to invest in science and technology. And as with anything a person might do make use of reason and evidence. -
ypu forgot warp drives, worm holes, emdrive, etc. They are theoretical but i mean black holes for energy is also pretty theoretical
-
At those speeds, your ship's collisions with random particles would create a lot of damage, depending on the size of the particle. A micro-meteorite could mean total annihilation. A Hydrogen atom would release massive amounts of high-energy radiation.
So unless we come up with shielding tech, those speeds aren't a good idea.
Also, even if you get to an "Earth-like" Planet, it probably wouldn't be safe for us. Foreign bacteria and viruses would wipe us out fast and/or our bacteria would wipe out their life fast. No guarantee we could eat their life as food, or that their soil would support our crops. -
A modest refinement to fusion drive might be antimatter catalysed fusion... Use pellets of lithium hydride or metallic hydrogen and detonate them with antiprotons. Less of a technical challenge than trying to use lasers.
The antiprotons could be injected into a linear accelerator and pulsed back and forth between two magnets to compact them a bit before releasing them to hit the pellets... This could be used instead of bombs, but with a smaller and lighter version of the Orion reaction damper reducing the mass of the ship very significantly.
We have also entirely dismissed Magic Faery Dust Drive and other faith based propulsion strategies.
Unicorn Rainbow Fart Drives in particular would be just chalk full of warm fuzzies and happiness, while being entirely free of any sort of mathematically unquantifiable evilness.
Faith based propulsion systems are also completely unfalsifiable so, nobody will ever be able to prove they can't work. -
If this were to happen, the general public would NEVER know and only the most elite would be on that ship. I personally would not want to go simply because:
Imagine you reach that planet, then what? It's going to be decades of building and creating. It's not certain what's on that planet and the extensive effects of space and a new atmosphere is unknown. Then is food and water.... -
5:58 makes NO sense at all dude. How can you get to alpha centauri in 3.3 years if light itself ( the fastest thing in the universe) can't even reach alpha centauri in less than 4.3 years. Your calculations are WAAAAY too wrong.
-
Kinda of sad that we have to observe something first before actually going there. Which means that humans have to finish the breakthrough star shot project first before actually going to alpha Centauri (The break through star shot is a project that would send tiny automated probes that would travel 20% the speed of light)
-
Somebody convince Trump there's gilded pussy in the Alpha Centauri system.

please change your haircut

dis guy has jeremy clarskon, james may and richard hammond's face all fused into one

LoLing so hard XD

Google "Truthcontest" if you want to know the truth of life.

What about crashing into other planets
-
Please, pretty please... Change your annoying and unnecessary "full of yourself" way of speaking. Just pause at 00:05, for instance - you stand there like you are going to fight. That may seem to you like the way a confident person speaks but actually there is a subtle difference between being confident and being aggressive. Not all aggressive people are confident and not all confident people are aggressive- think about this
-
Wouldn't the lasers used for the kugelblitz drive be more efficiently used as photon drives? Also, how would you keep the blackhole moving the way you want, and avoid it touching the rest of the craft?
-
What about using some combination of solar sails and fusion engines? Use the solar sails with lasers at the start to accelerate to a high % light speed, and then use the fusion engines on the other end to slow down. You'd only need to carry half the fuel you would if you used the fusion engine the whole way.
-
I totally love how the question at the end is pre-LIGO. Now is the future of the past.
-
how about the worm holes?
-
Question, if we're to go through with the black hole propulsion and reach 0.1 the speed of light in 20 days, how many Gs would the people on board experience and how much can the average human take? Is there any way to avoid killing the passengers?
