I've collected a few tidbits on the matter from a plethora of different sources. Is there any archaeological evidence from which the nature of the practices in those pre-christian days could be hypothesized?" ----- My personal channel: http://www.youtube.com/foudatz Topics/FAQs: http://paganperspectivecollab.blogspot.com -----

Thanks for problematizing the term "shaman" and "shamanic/shamanism," paganperspective!
@ForJahMan:"Shaman" is a Siberian (likely Tungusic) term which describes a very specific type of healer & ritual specialist with very specific duties. The term "shaman" and "shamanism" can only be properly and accurately applied to a number of circumpolar healing & ritual traditions (e.g., Inuit, Siberian, Mongolian, etc.). Western academics, ever fans of reductionism, essentialism, and orientalism, have incorrectly labelled any and all ritual/healing traditions which deal with spirit communication, trance, hallucinogens, etc. as "shamanism" because it's easier than using more accurate, native terms.
To illustrate this, a sculptor is a very specific type of artist, and sculpture is a very specific art form. You wouldn't call a watercolor painter, woodcarver, or metalworker a "sculptor," as it just isn't an accurate representation of the art form or the artist. They certainly have things in common, but lumping them together does a disservice to all the art forms being lumped AND is misleading/incorrect in general. Similarly, calling a curandero, houngan, nagual, cunningwoman, etc. a "shaman" just isn't correct and does all of them a disservice; they certainly have some striking similarities, but they cannot (and should not) be lumped together under one catch-all term. -
Of course it is shamanism, your opinion has nothing to do with history. And yes, no exact single role as a shaman. It literally applies directly to the definition of the word shaman. How the can people not call it shamanism, because they dont want to call it that, thats all. No real reason not to.

?????? i see the lips move, but WUUUT???

Very nice! Great attention to detail, especially with the plural of volva and stuff, and the attention to the context in the word shamanism etc. You did a damn good job
