2016 In Spaceflight
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
2016 was quite a year in Spaceflight, with 86 orbital launches, down one from last year, including 5 manned missions. SpaceX achieved what was thought to be the impossible by landing a first stage Falcon 9 on a floating barge at Sea. Orbital ATK brought Antares back to flight after the explosion in 2014. Unfortunately not all went well for 2016, SpaceX had a launch pad explosion destroying their rocket and AMOS-6 satellite for AMOS putting an end their launches for the year. In December we lost astronauts, hero and first American to orbit Earth John Glenn. And British astronaut Piers Sellers who lost his battle with cancer after flying the Space Shuttle three times.

Thank you for putting that video together. Here's to hoping for lots of success in 17 for all launch providers.

Does anybody know why they stopped watching the space shuttle? I thought they were going to replace it with a more advanced vehicle.
