Its sad and downright embarrassing we have not been able to put a single human in space since 2011, yes private agencies will do that eventually but NASA should always have at least 1 ship and launch vehicle (nothing fancy) to independently get to orbit. And this whole path to mars thing is a joke, the only way you get there is by presidential decree (which would be epic for this country after all our blunders recently) I hope Trump has the balls to do it.

Why speak about the American 30m telescope (planned for 2022 before permit problem)... and not the The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) 39m planned for 2024 (without permit problems)?
The light collection area of the European one is 978 m2 vs "only" 655 m2 for the American one.
Happy new year! -
happy new year everybody!
-
I really enjoy SFN. Thanks
You didn't mention SLS. IMHO, we'd be way better off spending this money on Lisa, or almost anything else. -
happy new year Sir

thanks for a great year, here's to another in 2017! i often come back here after watching the latest insanity from flat earthers

Pioneering is inherently unsafe, and there are lost lives in every wave of pioneers. That's just going to happen, and we had best get used to the idea. Sooner or later, somebody is going to die. And that's when we'll find out whether we are really grown-ups. On Mars, there aren't any hostile aborigines ready to attack the settlers, but the thin atmosphere, the solar radiation, and the cold temperatures will do as the "enemies" with which we aren't going to win every single battle.
Having said that, I agree that Elon Musk glosses over the details of surviving on Mars. His position seems to be that SpaceX will get people there, but how they manage to avoid a speedy death is somebody else's job. Pioneers ought to have at least a fighting chance. -
Happy New Year everyone!! I am in Italy, nearby Napoli, with view on the bay of Napels and the Vesuvius! :D :D I will be thinking about you all tonight at 12 pm! When our Earth ends another circle around our sweet darling Sun! See you all in 2017! :)

been a good few years watching SFN. glad i found you in 2012. please never stop.

Tony, I'd love to hear you address some of the "conspiracies" around NASA like all of their photos being heavily photoshopped/edited, video footage being faked, hiding major info from the public, etc. I personally believe NASA to be a very secretive and shady organization.
