2001 A Space Odyssey - ending
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Dave (old guy) is near death. In front of him monolith shows up. The monolith is somekind of step to a higher evolution level made by aliens. So then he is reincarnated in advanced spirit and new body form, a child, which could be a metaphor for purity, harmony and love. And now he watches the earth, actually means he is among us, still having bond with humanity.

I see many comments just guessing what happened here. Just read the book from Arthur Clarke and it will be more clear, it's a short book and pretty amazing to read with lot of visionary political and technological ideas for sci fi in the 60s, from evolution, space, hypnosis, AI to higher level of consciences and other dimensions.
You will enjoy the movie to a new level, I promise it.
(don't want to read it? then the idea of the final - Spoilers from the book - : ) Dave was guided by a super intelligence (She) that is something we can even call God (Clarke never says that in the book, but think on Q from StarTrek or even more). After entering into the monolith, Dave went trough a space port, an anti-universe, two suns (where he saw super-bubble life forms) and etc. After all that trip, he arrived to a place almost inside a sun which, strangely, is an hotel, with lobby, room, kitchen, etc. He discovered that it was almost perfect, but just a simulation. He went to sleep and his mind was scanned and then trasnfered to a new immortal body ( not a flesh but an incorporeal one) and then he, not as Dave anymore but as a new life form (that's why the baby in the movie), called the creature or the new creature or etc, started to travel in the universe now able to perceive other dimensions beyond the three we can perceive. He learned that now he can see all the universe and time at the same time and after that, he decided to go to the Earth to see what is happening, stopped a nuclear apocalypse and etc. Even if now he is incredible powerful and advanced compared with a human, he noticed that what he is now is just a new begining, far from being perfect. End. -
the monolith is god's iphone

In recent years I have learned a bit about Saturn worship and the significance of the cube. Learning that helps make more sense out of the monolith.

"The monolith is some kind of step to a higher evolution level made by aliens." I've watched 2001 again and again but have yet to see any indication of 'aliens" or an "alien presence"
Throughout the film one does encounter the rectangle - in ancient Greece it was known as "the golden ratio" Wherever one ventures one sees the golden ratio - the rectangle possibly implicit as omnipresence and omniscience. The monolith - golden ratio - rectangle is more in harmony with the concept of deism rather than an alien presence. -
New audiences wouldnt understand this movie if they watched it 10 times.

Please say not I am the only one who has watched the full movie and didn't get what is the actual story...
-
WOOOOO!

Beware the unknown, and be aware of it too.

Good Lord..... there are NO ALIENS. What "aliens"??? Jesus. This is a poem, an epic poem, that uses metaphor and symbols. You do not need to turn to "aliens" as the explanation for the events of this film! Start doing that and you find it a far superior and profound meaning.

After watching this I was confused, So i came to this YouTube video to hopefully explain what I saw but after reading the comments I'm even more confused.
-
but what about the eye of the baby? can someone tell me why is it like that?
-
The baby grew up to be Alex DeLarge.
-
Who else had nightmares about that baby

Talk about ambiguous...

The first 3/4 was from mr clark, the last 1/4 was from a high Stanley tripping his head off
thats from interviews so i was told at the time
Kubrick took loads of drugs towards the end of this film just like in apocalypses now messing up the ending of both films
depending on your point of view
i did read that in the us in the 60's hippy's would go in to watch it and time it just right so they got in and took the lsd at the 3/4 part -
This movie was fine the first time I saw it but then seeing it over and over again, you don't get the hype. The movie is good, but overrated to hell.

HOSHI NO KABBI

I've always wondered how long he was in that room for?. Or did the unknown being speed up his ageing process.

Man in his palace of aesthetic perfection. The end result of ambition. Comfortable and alone. The gesture to the monolith is similar to the "Creation of Adam" image. The monolith is God. Who put it there is the million dollar question. :)
